According to the Minnesota Historical Society, Anoka is known as the “Halloween Capital of the World” because it was the first city in the United States to put on a Halloween parade. Did you know that?
What you probably didn’t know is that Anoka is also home to one of the coolest historical sites in Minnesota – Peninsula Point Park. The park features a playground, fishing access, and a concession stand with water and electricity – perfect for enjoying a day out!
The rich history of the area is due to the confluence of the Mississippi and Rum rivers. These rivers provided early settlers with an abundance of fish, game, and timber. Father Lewis Hennepin visited this area for the first time in 1680, and settlers arrived to stay in 1844, but it wasn’t until 1857 that Anoka was officially founded as a city.
The Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources gave the city of Anoka a grant in 1995 to turn Peninsula Point, which was once a sewage treatment plant, into the stunning Two Rivers Historical Park. In addition to the eight historical markers, this park is home to the State Champion “Green Ash” Heritage Tree. If you follow the footpath, you will find educational signs that explain both the environmental interpretation and historical importance of the park. In fact, the park has been nationally recognized for its design and incorporation of historic elements, such as stone from the original 1850’s St. Paul County Courthouse integrated into the landscaping.
Peninsula Point Park is the perfect place to have a picnic with your family. The park has both open and sheltered picnic tables, cooking grills, and a playground for children. Parents can relax near the play area while their kids burn energy on the monkey bars or swings. Other activities available at Peninsula Point Park include biking and hiking trails that are great for exploring nature.
Find something for everyone by taking a trip to Peninsula Point Park for an enjoyable, relaxing time with your family. Stay safe!
